Farmed fish is currently the world’s fastest growing food industry with aquaculture producers currently suppling 47% of food fish globally. Consumption has risen very quickly over the past few decades with world consumption per capita at 9.9kg in the 1960’s to 20kg per capita in 2016 as stated in a report by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). This is in part due to the rising awareness by consumers about the health benefits of eating fish and fish related products.
It is likely that the maximum sustainable catch level of wild fish has already been achieved and it unlikely that more fish will be available from natural sources.
With the projected growth in fish consumption expected to double again in the next 20 years, this offers a great deal of opportunity for new fish feed production plants around the world.
The acceptability of farmed fish is now very high with a worldwide production of around 74 million tonnes of fish products of which 37 million tonnes are based on fish that specifically depend on a supply of feed. This in turn has led to great opportunity for expansion of extrusion technology into these markets.
